FAQs
What should my watering schedule look like for my Cacti?
- Cacti are famous for their ability to store water, enabling them to survive in arid environments. However, this doesn’t mean they can thrive without water altogether. In fact, watering is crucial for their growth. While it’s understandable to worry about overwatering, underwatering can be just as harmful. The key is to observe your cactus and water it only when the soil is completely dry.
- In spring and summer, we recommend watering your cactus only when the soil is dry—about 1-2 weeks. In fall and winter, during its dormant period, reduce watering to about once every 3-4 weeks. Always water thoroughly, but make sure excess water drains out.(If we are getting big rains that come through don’t stress about watering your plants until that soil has dried)
How do I protect my cacti in the Winter?
- When winter hits, keep your cactus cozy with breathable fabric like burlap or frost cloth. Just drape it over the plant before temperatures drop. Secure the edges with rocks or stakes or you can use string or twine to tie around the plant to keep secure. Only cover your cactus when frost is expected, and remove the cover once it warms up again. Some plants only need the heads of them covered so make sure to ask us to ensure your cacti’s safety!
How do I care for Cacti in the Summer Time?
- During those hot summer months, protect your cactus from the scorching sun with burlap or 30% shade screen. Drape the burlap over your plant and use the shade screen to filter the intense sunlight, keeping your cactus cool and safe. You can use string or twine to secure the covering as needed. This simple cover will help your cactus survive even the hottest days while still letting it breathe!
What does Propagating cacti mean?
- "Propagating a plant" means creating new plants from an existing one, typically through asexual reproduction methods, which results in offspring that are genetically identical to the parent plant. Essentially, it’s how you "clone" a plant through cutting and division of plants into smaller plants.

What steps do i need to take to Propagate my Cacti?
- Choose the Right Time Take cuttings during the warmer, drier months to promote faster rooting and avoid excess moisture issues.
- Select a Healthy Cutting Pick a healthy, mature segment with areoles, strong growth, and vibrant color. For columnar cacti like Mexican Fence Post, make sure the cutting is at least 6-8 inches long, but keep it under 24 inches for easier handling. Always leave part of the stem on the mother plant, ensuring it’s above the soil line to encourage offsets (new stalks).
- Let the Cutting Callus After taking the cutting, let it callus by placing it in a dry, bright, well-ventilated spot for 2 weeks. This prevents rot and infection, acting like a protective scab. Rotate the cutting regularly to avoid uneven growth, and plant it within 2-4 weeks.
- Planting the Cutting Once the cutting is callused, plant the callused end roughly 2-3 inches into a well-draining mix. Gently pack the soil around it and place the pot in a warm, bright location. You may need a stake and some tree tape to keep it up-right. For the first 4-8 weeks, don’t water – let the cutting stay dry until you see roots starting to form.
- Watering and Care After roots appear, water lightly and allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. As roots establish, water less frequently but more deeply. Be sure to let the soil dry out for several days before watering again to avoid overwatering and root rot.
